Making small piles!
I enjoy turning big piles of random objects into well organized, small piles of like things. And I’m good at it. You may call it a superpower of mine. Lucky for me I’m starting a business that requires this ability and attention to detail!
I’ve worked on a lot of projects that took years to implement, that were completed via computer files and conversations. On and off, I found it difficult to stay committed to work when it was intangible for so long. At Yield, I find it very rewarding, to be able to quickly go from many big piles of clutter to valuable materials, sorted into bins, ready to be shipped to the next phase of manufacturing.
I get in the flow thinking about the collection.
I find myself thinking about the ways we can organize materials: by shape, color, size, texture, level of opacity, smell… I think about what it took to get this pile of objects to be in the same place at the same time. I think about what these things can be and (hopefully) will be.
Yield is an attempt to bring lots of my interests, passions, and strengths together into one focused initiative. It wasn’t until getting close to launching that I realized: I get to make small piles of things! Getting to bring another part of myself into this work is a helpful boost each week and helps keep me going.
I don’t (always) love cleaning up messes after my kids.
I do find in enjoyable helping “clean” at this bigger scale. When Yield grows I’ll hire people to take over the collecting and sorting. It will be interesting to see who else finds joy in this task the way I do. I don’t think I’m the only one and I know it isn’t for everyone. Luckily Yield (and more ventures to come) will require lots of skills, passions, and know-how that I don’t have. I look forward to finding ways to support people’s untapped superpowers.
